Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (IATA: SJU, ICAO: TJSJ, FAA LID: SJU) is the main international airport in Puerto Rico - also referred to as San Juan Airport, and formally as Isla Verde International Airport. It is five kilometers southeast of the capital city of San Juan.
It is also the busiest airport in the Caribbean region by passenger traffic. It has passenger flights to destinations throughout North America and Europe.
Established in 1929, it has two runways and covers an area of 1,600 acres with annual passenger traffic of 9.4 million in 2019. It sits 3 meters above sea level at 18°26′21″N and 066°00′07″W.

History of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport
In 1945, discussions and consultations were conducted to determine the future of the airport. Expansion projects followed shortly at Isla Verde when the construction was approved by the Puerto Rico Planning Board in 1946.
A year later, the Port Authority of Puerto Rico assumed title to and ownership of the Isla Grande Airport.
In 1949, the first phase of construction of the Isla Verde Airport was completed. The second phase also began: paving the runway, taxiways, and platforms.
A year later, Pan American World Airways, Eastern Air Lines, Caribbean Atlantic Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Dominican Airlines, and Flying Tigers Airline began flying passengers in and out of Puerto Rico.
In 1955, a modern Puerto Rico International Airport was inaugurated. It had a six-story passenger terminal, a control tower, a runway, a cargo building, fire and police stations, and a hotel.
Four years later, passenger jets arrived at the airport. To accommodate growing passenger traffic, expansion and improvement projects began. The old runway was also extended and a second runway was completed in 1974.
In 1985, the airport was renamed to its current name, in honor of the first governor of Puerto Rico. In 2001, the American hub saw over 60 daily mainline flights, mostly to the United States.
Between the years 2000 and 2005, major projects were initiated and completed, such as the third phase of the rehabilitation, modification, and expansion of Terminal B, and the new B/C connector.
The busiest international routes from SJU in 2015 include Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Panama City, Panama, British Virgin Islands Tortola, British Virgin Islands, Sint Maarten Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, Santiago, Dominican Republic, Bogotá, Colombia, Madrid, Spain, Toronto, Canada, and Frankfurt, Germany.

The airport complex consists of the main terminal building, with four interconnected concourses and a separate terminal with another concourse.
